Also known as the Green Island Ficus. Has oval to roundish dark green shiny leaves. Easily forms rosetts at the end of it's branches if kept trimmed. Branches and fruits well and easily develops aerial roots if kept humid. Different than other ficus varieties in that the leaves are much thicker. We grow the Juniper in lava-rock (pumice stone) by boring a hole in the rock and sawing flat the bottom of the stone. Since the lava-rock is pourous the rock serves the same purpose as the bonsai pot. When we think of a traditional bonsai and what it should look like we think of a Juniper procumbens. In 1768 Admiral Louis de Bougainville discovered the vine that bears his name. Through the ensuing years, this Brazillian Beauty has assumed its rightful place as one the most popular, spectacular and beautiful tropical plants. The vibrant purple and pink colors comes not from the small white tubular flowers, but from the three large paper-like bracts that surround each flower. Hence the name "paper flower". The Bougainvillea will typically lose some leaves for a short time during the winter due to lower lighting conditions.
