Really the most exciting of the Redwoods is the Dawn Redwood, a native of Manchuria China. Thought to be extinct, but re-discovered in the 1940's. The Dawn Redwood is a true Redwood. Like our Redwoods they are a living fossil an isolated "relic" species from a long time ago when there were vast forests of them. Seeds were introduced in the U.S. in 1948, and has been increasingly popular as an ornamental tree. The foliage is more lacey than our native Redwood but what is very different about the Dawn Redwood is that it is decideous. In the fall the light green sprays turn yellow, then bronze, and fall off. Also known as Green Island Ficus. Has oval to roundish dark green shiny leaves. Easily forms rosetts at the end of its branches if kept trimmed. Branches and fruits well and easily develops aerial roots when kept humid. Different than other Ficus varieties in that the leaves are much thicker. Does well in lower, medium or high lighting conditions. Ours has exposed roots growing over a textured rock and down into the soil. One of our favorites. Native to Aruba and Cuacao the Divi Divi is a small thornless very slow growing tree whose seed pods are a source of tanin. It has very small (less than 1/2" long) evergreen foliage. The small flowers appear in terminal clusters and are very fragrant. The creamy blooms are very sweet and pretty, but it is the bright colored copper and pink new growth that really attracts attention. Great for indoors. 8 years old. 17"-19" tall. The rocks selected for this unusual arrangement are imported and washed in acid, making them strikingly unique. We then cut and cement the rocks to one side of the pot and create an ample well on the opposite side to hold water. A ceramic bridge is cemented to the rocks on either side. A pagolda figurine is also added and cemented to the stone located above the bridge. To complete the scene, we cement a miniature, glazed, mud figurine fisherman overlooking the water, holding a fishing pole and fish. On the opposite side of the restful scene, we have selected for planting, the Baby Jade. This succulent bonsai, also known as the "Elephant Bush", is native to South Africa and has pale green leaves that are almost round and about one-third the size of the common Jade plant. This braided ficus has a real golf ball nestled between the four braids which form the trunk of the tree. Tree of a Thousand Stars. The Japonica has somewhat elongated spoon shaped, shiny green leaves. It is a twiggy tree that grows tighter with shearing.
